Resident Evil Requiem gameplay is set to feature dual protagonists, Leon S. Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft. The rumors around Leon’s return were officially confirmed during The Game Awards 2025 last week. The latest trailer gave us our first look at the older Leon as he will once again look to uncover mysteries related to the Umbrella Corporation’s activities. Now, we finally have some more information about dual-protagonist gameplay that we will get to see in Resident Evil Requiem.
Resident Evil Requiem to Offer a Mix of Survival Horror and Combat Gameplay
In a conversation with Automata, Resident Evil Requiem director Akifumi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa have talked about the two protagonists and their approach towards missions. The game will have a unified story, but players will switch between Leon and Grace as it proceeds. The execs have described Leon as a seasoned veteran and Grace as “the biggest scaredy-cat in Resident Evil history”.
The difference in their personalities will dictate how their individual sections will play out. Grace’s section will feel scarier with a focus on a survival horror gameplay approach. On the other hand, Leon’s section will be combat-heavy, as we saw in Resident Evil 4. Nakanishi said players will experience different kinds of tension through each section. The gameplay is “almost equally split” between Leon and Grace, and will be like “jumping into a cold bath after sitting in a hot sauna”. Players will experience a combination of horror and action as each section will unfold. The overall section structure is similar to Resident Evil Revelations.
Kumazawa added that new players will not need to go through past games to understand Leon’s role in Resident Evil Requiem. The only thing they need to know is that he was involved in the Raccoon City incidents in Resident Evil 2. However, as Leon is now wiser and older, this will add a new dimension to his personality and how he deals with problems.
