A new report published by analyst David Gibson, a senior professional at MST International, states that there is a “high likelihood” Sony will release the PlayStation 6 (PS6) somewhere after 2028.

The main reason for this would be the Japanese giant’s intention of extending the PlayStation 5 (PS5) cycle given the current console’s and Sony’s online offers beating revenue forecasts on its latest reports.

For the record, there is one report from Sony due to come out in February 5, 2026.

“Sony expects the PS5 lifecycle to be longer than that of previous console generations. There’s a high likelihood that the PS6 launch will occur after 2028.”

If you’re a PlayStation fan, you know that Sony usually works its consoles on a 10-year cycle, and most of the time, some generations may overlap as one console’s cycle ends long after the next one’s begins. Such is the case today, for instance: despite the PS5 being its main focus, Sony is still working on the PlayStation 4 in some aspects — although it is essentially in its “phase out” state, getting less and less releases and support (Final Fantasy XIV and Genshin Impact comes to mind).

The PlayStation brand is still very popular on Amazon, though: not only the PS4 is still on sale, but both versions of the current console (disc and digital) are available as well (this one and also this one).

Despite being on the up an up when it comes to sales, Sony will, however, focus on creating more valuable experiences to current PS5 owners, instead of trying to get new users. According to Gibson, some recent moves made by the company show hints of that: there is a Japan-only PS5 model sold at reduced price, and the company did invest heavily on its Black Friday deals in the Western market last November.

Granted, Sony did not comment on the report, but it is available in full (although in Japanese). You can read it here.
