CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has officially surpassed 40 million copies sold worldwide, nearly six years after the RPG first launched in December 2020.

The developer shared the milestone on X, thanking players for helping Night City reach “40 million dreamers.” The sales total includes purchases of the standard edition and the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which bundles the base game with the Phantom Liberty expansion. Sales of the expansion as a standalone purchase are not included in the figure.

The achievement marks another major chapter in Cyberpunk 2077‘s turnaround. Following a launch that was widely criticized for technical issues and performance problems, particularly on last-generation consoles, CD Projekt Red spent years improving the game through patches, free updates, and the release of the well-received Phantom Liberty expansion. Those efforts have helped transform the title into one of the company’s biggest commercial successes.

With more than 40 million copies sold, Cyberpunk 2077 now ranks among the best-selling video games of all time. And there is still room for the game to move even higher on the all-time best-seller list if its momentum continues. However, it remains behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is still CD Projekt Red’s highest-selling game. With the fantasy RPG continuing to attract new players more than a decade after launch, Cyberpunk is unlikely to overtake its sibling anytime soon.

Even so, reaching 40 million copies is a remarkable feat for a game that once faced an uncertain future. What began as one of the industry’s most controversial launches has evolved into one of gaming’s most notable comeback stories, with Cyberpunk 2077 now firmly established among the medium’s biggest commercial hits.
