This is what you get when you deliver on your promises and actually give gamers what they want. I’ve been pretty critical of Ubisoft over the past few years because of the number of underwhelming Assassin’s Creed games it has released. My last true Assassin’s Creed experience that I genuinely enjoyed was Assassin’s Creed Origins back in 2017. Well… not until now.
I absolutely adore Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, and judging by the numbers, it looks like I’m not the only one. Ubisoft’s reimagining of one of the franchise’s most beloved entries has gotten off to an incredible start, quickly becoming one of the most successful Assassin’s Creed launches ever.
On Steam alone, Black Flag Resynced has already reached a peak concurrent player count of 99,451 players, making it the biggest Assassin’s Creed launch the platform has ever seen. To put that into perspective, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which many considered a return to form for the series when it launched in 2025, peaked at 64,825 concurrent players. Before that came Assassin’s Creed Odyssey with just over 62,000 players, while Origins reached a peak of around 41,500.
Those are impressive numbers in their own right, but Black Flag Resynced has comfortably sailed past every single one of them. Its success isn’t limited to Steam either. The game has been performing strongly across multiple platforms, while also climbing to the top of Steam’s Top Sellers chart shortly after launch. Ubisoft had previously revealed that pre-orders had already broken internal records, and it’s now clear that the game’s launch has lived up to that early momentum.
Perhaps none of this should come as a surprise. For years, we’ve been asking Ubisoft to revisit Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, widely regarded as one of the greatest entries in the franchise thanks to its memorable pirate setting, naval combat, and charismatic protagonist, Edward Kenway. Rather than delivering a simple visual upgrade, Ubisoft promised a more meaningful reimagining that stayed faithful to what made the original special while modernizing the experience. And based on the early reception, it seems the developer has finally struck the right balance.
